Membership Changes and Fees for 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Dear Prospective Club Member

As you will all be aware the club facilities are changing and improving at a rapid rate and we have further plans to develop Horsham Fields both to the playing surfaces and to the clubhouse facilities. This follows the securing of a twenty five year lease with Plymouth City Council which guarantees our sole use of the amenities.

To be able to fund all of this we need a larger member base as all RFU funding is based on statistics including number of members, qualified coaches, youth players etc. This will also increase the allocation of international tickets to the club. At present to clubs main source of income is its membership, as we do not yet have a club house on our Horsham ground.

We need to restructure our membership and to that end a new system of charging and payment is being introduced for this coming Season 2009/10.  There is also an issue with voting rights, grievance procedures and adherence to club rules and regulations where this can only apply to club members. We are a members’ club and therefore should be run by a committee elected by members. At present this is not possible as the youth section has no representation, no one would expect young children to be burdened with such a responsibility.

This is being overcome by the setting up of a new family membership which, where applicable, will include both parents and one child. For those families with a second child there will be a reduced rate as an additional payment on top of the new family membership.

We have an allocation of international tickets and each member will have an opportunity to apply for these tickets. Also all members have free use of our clubhouse at Tavy Lodge in Mutley for general social use or for private functions including children’s parties.

The club is providing two options to pay this season’s fees, in a lump sum as before or by monthly standing order over 9 months (September to May).  There is an appeal process in place to address cases of hardship which begins by contacting our Treasurer, Shaun Stevens, on Plymouth 518570 (during working hours). Every case will be treated on its merits and in the strictest confidence by the Executive Committee.

We are constantly looking to invest in the future which includes further qualifying our current coaches which in turn will improve the opportunities for all of our rugby players.

Everything is “work in progress” and this membership structure is no different. Hopefully it is clear to see what the club is trying to achieve and more people will want to be a member of such a proactive organization.

Nigel Higginson.

Club Chairman.
